We’re happy to announce that we’ve added mobile phone verification to our onboarding platform through a recent integration with Twilio, a cloud communications firm based in San Francisco, CA. This new authentication method will make account opening even more user-friendly and will further strengthen what is already the most secure and compliant onboarding platform in the country.
Twilio’s Verify API validates users via SMS and Voice. The API’s key features help to reduce fraudulent accounts and onboarding delays by:
- Verifying a user at sign-up by confirming phone ownership.
- Delivering a one-time passcode via SMS and voice, anywhere in the world.
- Translating the SMS or voice verification into 29 languages, allowing for increased global usability.
- Configuring the phone number or short codes used to send the code.
Simon Thorpe, director of product for Twilio, further explains, “Email addresses have long been relied upon to validate the connection between a real person and their online account, yet it isn’t as effective or reliable as phone verification. Phone numbers offer a much stronger link between a real person and their online presence. The simple answer to reducing illegitimate account creation is to leverage a person’s phone number, instead of their email address, for authentication.”
Our Director of Product Management Jeff Coomber, who is always looking to evolve the platform, says he saw aligning with Twilio as an ideal opportunity to further improve our customer verification process to protect our clients and their customers. “Considering how easy it has become for fraudsters to access lists of stolen email addresses, we felt it was time to add another layer of security for our clients. Mobile phone verification using Twilio’s Verfiy API was the ideal solution for us.”
thirdstream CEO Christian Clapton says the Twilio API will represents significant value for our clients. “Not only does it add another layer of security, it offers the assurance that new accounts are being opened by real people. Protecting data and preventing fraud are our highest priority and while our onboarding solutions already exceed every Canadian banking regulatory requirement, mobile phone verification enabled by our partnership with Twilio adds another layer of security for our clients and their customers.”
